Uniform Expectations for 2019-2020

As many parents like to plan ahead we felt it was important to send out details of the changes to our uniform, following our referendum earlier in the year, along with a reminder of our on-going uniform expectations.

We have worked hard to ensure that standards in this area remain high and indeed, the vast majority of our students look smart all of the time.   From listening to the views of the students and honouring how they voted, we have kept a uniform that is fairly informal but as a result it is important that what we do specify is adhered to.

Unfortunately, a small minority do not always wear the correct uniform which means time that could be spent on teaching and learning is spent on addressing these issues so we would really appreciate your support in ensuring that next academic year starts successfully for all students. We expect all of our young people to make the right choices about meeting ALNS uniform expectations and we support them to do this by being firm (but fair) and using our sanction system.

As you begin to purchase uniform for September, can I draw your attention to the following changes:

  1. House polo shirts – we have introduced a house polo shirt which is similar to the current one, with the school badge on the chest but with a coloured piping around the collar. As a reminder, the house colours are as follows:-
    Warrior – Blue
    Spinnaker – Purple
    Victory – Silver
    Mary Rose – Green
This item is available only from our uniform suppliers, Penelope Anne Schoolwear (34-36 Tangier Road, Portsmouth, PO3 6NJ) and Hargreaves Promotions (Aspen House, Airport Services Road, Portsmouth, PO3 5RA).
For Year 11 – the polo shirt is the same Black and White one we have had for a number of years but it now features a house coloured logo on the arm.

  2. Skirts – we have introduced a school skirt which is black and must be bought to be knee length.  It has the school badge on the hem to identify it clearly as an ALNS one.  No other skirt is allowed, including for Year 11.
This item is available only from our uniform suppliers, Penelope Anne Schoolwear (34-36 Tangier Road, Portsmouth, PO3 6NJ) and Hargreaves Promotions (Aspen House, Airport Services Road, Portsmouth, PO3 5RA).

  3. PE top – We have introduced a house coloured top to replace the purple polo shirts.  These are more suitable for sport and in addition are cheaper.
This item is available only from our uniform suppliers, Penelope Anne Schoolwear (34-36 Tangier Road, Portsmouth, PO3 6NJ) and Hargreaves Promotions (Aspen House, Airport Services Road, Portsmouth, PO3 5RA).

There are no other changes to the uniform.

There are a number of other expectations I would like to draw to your attention at this time in order that your child has as smooth a start as possible to next year.

  1. Tight trousers, jeans or leggings are NOT acceptable uniform
Jeans, leggings and skin-tight trousers are not allowed. If they “look like jeans”, we will consider them to be jeans.   ALNS school trousers should be black tailored, full length trousers which are loose fitting.  Socks (plain black or white) should be long enough so that there is no gap between them and trousers.
  2. Piercings
We would also like to remind you that there should be no piercings other than 1 pair of earrings (or a single one) in the earlobes only, studs or hoops of no more than 1cm diameter.  Students will be expected to remove all other piercings during the school day.  We will not be permitting students to cover inappropriate facial piercings with tape, the piercings must be removed.
  3. Make-up & nail varnish (including acrylic nails)
Nail Varnish is not allowed, other than for Year 11, and nails must be short in length as this is a Health and Safety requirement for some subjects. Acrylic nails are not allowed, other than in Year 11, where they must be short and of a natural cover.
  4. School shoes
I would also draw your attention to the rule on shoes.School shoesshould beplain black including the edges of soles and any laces etc. Any brand logo must also be completely black and discreet.

To support with genuine emergencies, we do keep a small stock of spare black footwear and uniform which we can loan to students on a ‘first come first served’ basis to wear on a temporary basis should they arrive at school wearing shoes or other items which are not school uniform.

Please note that students will not be allowed to attend their normal lessons if they are not wearing correct uniform and they will undertake their learning away from their peers.

If you are at all unsure of what may or may not be appropriate items of uniform, please seek clarification from your child’s Head of House or tutor before making a potentially inappropriate purchase.

As mentioned, the uniform posters are attached for your reference.

Thank you for your continued support.
