Art KS3 Curriculum

Design is taught for 4 lesson over two weeks in year 7. During this time students study Art, Textiles, food and 3D Design for 1 rotation each within the ‘Design Curriculum’.

In Year 8 students study Art for two rotations and then Textiles, food and 3D Design for 1 rotation each within the ‘Design Curriculum’.

At the end of year 8 students have the option to continue studying any of the design subjects including the added options of Graphics and Photography further at KS4.

Year 7

Art is taught during two rotations in year 7. In the other 3 rotations, the students are taught Textiles, 3D Design and Food.

Within the two rotations of Art, students are introduced to the formal elements of Art and Design and are able to explore and develop their own ideas from artists and craftspeople linking the artists’ work to the world that they live. From the research students are to experiment with a variety of materials and learn how to use them correctly and effectively. Students are encouraged to modify their work as it develops and produce a sketchbook showing a creative journey through practical and written work.

In the second rotation in art students will study multicultural art forms and explore why Art exists and how it is used as a form of communication.

Aims and Objectives:

  • To gain skills in painting, drawing, printing and mixed media
  • To gain a knowledge of the formal elements of art
  • To gain an understanding of other cultures and how their art is shaped through their cultural ideas
  • To explore the social and emotional aspects of art in other cultures
  • For students to explore themselves and their own culture through other cultures’ art forms

 

What new skills will I be learning?

  • The colour wheel and colour theory
  • How to research the work of artists’ and craftspeople to gain an understanding of other cultures
  • To explore the social and emotional aspects of art from other cultures and the world in which they live
  • Develop skills in drawing and recording from primary and secondary sources
  • Develop painting skills with an understanding of colour and painting techniques
  • Mixed media (a variety of materials used together)
  • How to evaluate and modify their work and it progresses

Year 8

Within art, students are able to explore and develop their own ideas from artists and craftspeople who work with the theme of Organics linking the artists’ work to the world that they live. Students are to experiment with a variety of materials and learn how to develop the techniques learnt in year 7 with a greater focus on the materials and their properties. Students are encouraged to modify their work as it develops and produce a sketchbook showing a creative journey through practical and written work.

Aims and Objectives:

Organic Art

  • To gain an understanding of natural and man-made materials
  • To gain an understanding of organic forms as a starting point in Art and Design
  • To gain skills in painting, drawing, printing and/or clay, developing use of formal elements learnt in Year 7

20th Century Art- Cubism

  • To gain an understanding of different art and artists in the 20th Century
  • To explore the social and emotional aspects of art in the 20th Century
  • For students to explore themselves and their own culture through art and artists of the 20th Century
  • To gain skills in painting, drawing, image manipulation, relief, mixed media, photography

What new skills will I be learning?

  • How to analysis the work of artists’ and craftspeople to gain an understanding of other cultures
  • To explore the social and emotional aspects of art and how it reflects and links to other subjects
  • Develop skills and techniques in drawing and recording from primary and secondary sources in a variety of materials
  • Develop painting skills with an understanding of colour
  • Print Making
  • Mixed Media Mixed media (a variety of materials used together)
  • How to evaluate and modify their work and it progresses making links to theories within art
